Research On The Nature of The Island -‬‬
As a Physical, Manifested And Projected Environment
Parking Gallery
10th April - 28th June

Since 2009, Nina Barnett and Robyn Nesbitt have been referring to the temporary physical and psychological place they inhabit together as the island. This metaphorical ‘island’ is an essential part of their work together, as an intimate space they share separated from their lives and individual art practices. The island is the isolated time they spend together each year on residencies, it is their blog within a virtual sea, and it is a remote thinking place that they inhabit together while separated.

Over a three month period (April - June 2013), an archive of island research was collected in an installation at the Parking Gallery. The archive consists of maps, drawings, texts, found objects, books and various other ephemera concerning the island, shaping its parameters and attributes, and its development as a presence in the artists’ collaborative practice. Each week new material was presented and then archived according to date displayed and the characteristic of the set. The collection is both a self contained artwork, and an accumulative precursor to residencies the artists are attending together in Switzerland and Norway (July - November 2013).

In addition to the archive, Nesbitt and Barnett will be hosting periodic screenings, discussions and slide-show presentations concerning islands. Documentation of the events will be present in the archive. Announcements of the dates of presentations forthcoming.

Nina Barnett and Robyn Nesbitt have been working collaboratively for eight years, both at a distance and in close proximity. Their work tests the boundaries and facets of a collaborative practice, considering the nature of two divergent minds in the generation of drawings, performances, artist books and installations. While apart they communicate telepathically, through shared routine, and via online dialogue at www.coexistent.net.
